A Do-Nothing Work Day
By: Terri Zwierzynski | Leave a comment

In my local newspaper this morning, was an intriguing article: Take time to do…nothing. Excerpt: "This summer, Kim Blakeman and her three kids are doing nothing. There is no camp. There are no enrichment classes. Most days, there isn’t even much of a schedule."
On this hot summer day in North Carolina, it got me to thinking about how refreshing a whole day of not working could be. A day to rest the body and mind, to not even think about what is on the to-do list, and to recharge the spirit.
This can be so hard for us to do, as owners and sole employees of our businesses. To get started, here are some ideas for constructing your own "Do-Nothing Work Day":
- Dress down for the day. If you normally dress in a suit, try shorts. If casual is your usual style, stay in pajamas all day. If you already wear pajamas all day…
- Sleep late.
- Eat breakfast outside, paper in hand, feet up.
- Turn off your email program, and send your phone to voice mail. Same with your cell phone, PDA, pager, etc.
- Hide your to-do list.
- Have a 2-hour lunch with a friend who is also not on a time schedule.
- Do a puzzle.
- Watch a movie.
- Take a nap.
- Read a book.
- Drink a glass of wine.
- Play with your pet.
- Play video games.
- Google yourself.
- If you absolutely cannot live without checking your email, take your laptop to the deck, put your feet in a cool pool (a turkey roaster pan will do in a pinch!) and set a timer.
- Order dinner out (may as well make this last the whole day!)
Have you ever done this? Please share your experiences and add your favorite "Do-Nothing" ideas to the list!
