Want to Make a Personal Difference in 2008?

Have you’ve ever wished you could do something about global hunger, poverty, or another issue, but thought you were powerless? I’ve felt that way. Until recently, when I was shocked to discover the huge impact that a small action on my part has made in the lives of over 800 people a continent away!In July of 2006, my friend Julian Kalmar felt helpless about violence in the world, in particular the plight of refugees affected by violence. It was the middle of the unrest between Israel and Lebanon (Hizbullah), and with friends in both countries, he decided to stop wishing — and start acting.

So Julian created 10 Million Clicks For Peace, a viral marketing campaign/project to create awareness and donations to ease the plight of refugees worldwide. As a colleague and admirer of Julian’s huge vision, I became a launch partner. At the time, I felt I could at least do my little part — announcing the project to a few thousand subscribers and inviting a few dozen colleagues to also become partners. Just a few emails and a modest monthly donation to the cause — all from my laptop. No big deal.

At least I thought so, until recently when Julian informed me that I was the first “Peace Promoter” to have my “Peace Impact Tree” go 8 levels deep — meaning I referred someone who referred someone, etc., eight times over.

Curious, I logged into my account and discovered a very creative tool that the Peace Project uses to let supporters know how much their actions have achieved. Ingenious, really! My “Peace Impact Meter” tells me not only how many refugees have been fed and sheltered for one day by my personal contributions (54), but also the numbers fed and sheltered by people I’ve referred (748). That’s 15 times the number I’ve personally helped!Put another way, that’s a family of 4, fed and sheltered for over 6 months. A family that, without my actions, might be hungry and without a place to sleep at night.

So never discount the impact even your smallest action can have. I know I won’t, ever again.Support 10 Million Clicks For Peace today.

Never underestimate the power of clicks. Another web site you might want to check out is freerice.com. It was created by the United Nations and involves a fun vocabulary game. For each word you get right, you get to donate 20 grains of rice to the countries who need it. Check out http://www.froodee.com/announcements/free-rice for more details.

    Jen –

Cool site! I pulled it up to take a look and my daughter started telling me all about how her class (Montessori, 4-5th grade) uses this site everyday as a vocabulary work. And it’s a nice brain-exercise for when we self-employed want a break — and get to do a good deed at the same time! www.freerice.com

    Thanks,
