Next time you say, “But it’s still not perfect,” ask yourself:
* What is perfect to you?
* What will benefit you more, perfection or overall productivity?
* How would your project appear to an impartial observer?
Exploration:
Being a perfectionist can, indeed, paralyze or inhibit your ability to move forward. Even though it might feel essential in the moment, perfectionism truly keeps you from maximizing your potential.
Perhaps your perfectionist serves to promote an illusion of protecting you from criticism or taking on challenges that feel scary.
Now ask yourself these additional questions. Jot down the first answers that come to mind:
* What are you trying to make up for by being perfect?
* What does it cover up?
* What does it protect you from?
Give yourself 2 minutes to answer each question. What patterns do you discover?
As you see, perfectionism can have a life of its own. Make sure you’re in the driver’s seat!
