(Updated statistics at the bottom of this post)

A year or so ago, I started noticing a lot of sites showing a lightbox/popup with a subscription form for their newsletter. I found it slightly annoying — it interrupts your reading, and you have to click the X to get rid of it. In some cases it shows up on every page you visit, which is downright rude in my opinion. But when I started seeing them on many blogs and websites, I figured they must work…so I started investigating.

The best article I found with good data on how well this technique works is Problogger Darren Rowse’s article, How To Drastically Increase Subscriber Numbers To Your Ezine Newsletter. Based on this article, I decided to experiment. I had two requirements: 1) there had to be a way for the frequent visitor to turn it off permanently, and 2) it had to show at most once per day.

I don’t use Aweber, so I had to find lightbox code I could implement myself. That’s where Will Bontrager of WillMaster.com came to the rescue. He had recently written a lightbox script that allowed you to easily customize the size, color, placement, timing and frequency of the lightbox. At my request, he added code to allow the frequent visitor to ask to “never see this box again.” Perfect for my needs!

We’ve now implemented this feature and the results, in just a short amount of time, have been astounding (note we had some early technical difficulties having a signup box both on the page and in the lightbox…solved by putting the lightbox into an iframe.) Looking at the first week of January (pre-lightbox) vs. February (post-lightbox), signups have increased 50%. I wanted to be sure this was due to the lightbox…and indeed, the lightbox may account for even more, with half of all signups being through the lightbox. (This is a small sample period, so the data is a little rough — but the results were so good, I was just too excited not to share right away!)

Looking at Google Analytics — our conversion rate is up 34%. Our bounce rate is actually down a couple percentage points. Average pageviews per visit are up a few percentage points. Conclusion: no adverse effect from “visitor annoyance”. Just good results from conversions!

If you don’t have Aweber (or aren’t happy with the options available), consider Will Bontrager’s Lightbox Generator. It’s available to all Website’s Secret members ($60/six months gets you access to dozens of handy scripts that offer cool features on your website; it’s well worth the cost!)

What do you think about our popup/lightbox? Do you have any questions about implementing something like this on your own website? Please comment below!

Updated stats from February 2011:

Appreciated this post, Teri. My first reaction to pop ups was negative, and you shared impressive stats that made me re-think popups. Thanks!

You are welcome, Julie! I think it’s all in the implementation details…being able to make it so the user can control whether it appears again or not makes all the difference!

For websites built on WordPress there’s a free version of WP Super Popup plugin that makes it quick and easy to create similar popup ads to yours, Terri. Not quite as flexible, but a nice option: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-popup/

Thanks for this resource, Michelle! Definitely easy to implement for WordPress users!

Love Solo E. I’m evidentally one of the few people who don’t like pop-ups. Your pop-up comes up every single time even though I’ve clicked to never show it again. I’d be okay with it popping up once if the never again button actually worked.

I have a feeling it is the way my computer is set up to not accept certain cookies. Am not technical though and don’t feel I should have to spend time to figure out how to change my computer so that the lifetime cookie thing that pops up every time I click on the don’t show ever again actually works. I’m certain that I’m not the only one having this problem. Most never say anything though.

Beth, I’m another who uses volatile cookies. Probably that’s what you’ve got set up.

Volatile cookies are cookies that are deleted automatically when the browser closes. They don’t hang around. (Cookies that hang around for days or years can be referred to as persistent cookies.)

There are ways to set cookies into Adobe and other ways to make cookies persist, in spite of the site visitor preferring only volatile cookies. However, from my point of view, using those methods is underhanded and sneaky, not something an honorable and trustworthy site owner would knowingly do.

Remembering the browser and its site preferences from one session to another is done with cookies. There is currently no other reliable method that I am aware of.

Those of us who use volatile cookies are unable to take advantage of features that require persistent cookies.

If a feature requires persistent cookies (like the “never again” feature of the sign-up box on this page), and the browser rejects persistent cookies, then the feature is not available for that browser. It’s just the way it is.

It’s a trade-off. Accepting only volatile cookies traded for the unavailability of persistent cookie features.

    Hi Beth,
I’ve added a note to the popup to let folks know that the “never again” link requires cookies to work. I’d intended to do that from the beginning, but had forgotten, so thanks for the (unintended) reminder.

As Will says, there’s no other way to fix this for those who don’t allow cookies. I used to be cookie-averse too. Then I realized that there were many benefits to allowing cookies…websites I visit remember who I am, the Weather Channel remembers my location, etc. So I started allowing all cookies. In Firefox it’s pretty easy to do; if you’d like to allow cookies just go to Preferences > Privacy and check Allow Cookies. But as indicated, it’s a preference and a tradeoff that only you can decide about.

Curiously, yours is the first complaint we’ve gotten. If there are others, I hope to hear from them as well. So far, we’ve gotten a lot more subscribers (and not more unsubscribes) so it’s a tradeoff to be able to serve more solo entrepreneurs. I am sincerely sorry I don’t have a different solution for you.

    Respectfully,
    Terri Z
