Find Time to Create Quiet-Some Timely Thoughts

Finding time to take a breath can be one of the most challenging undertakings in your daily life.  And yet, it is also one of the most rejuvenating gifts you can ever give yourself.  So, the question is, how can you create quiet for yourself in your daily life?

In thinking about this. let’s start by reflecting on the recent holidays.  Did you notice that there were pockets of quiet?  I know that I did.  The volume of e-mail was way down, the phone rang less, Facebook was quieter, and it seemed like many people were ‘unplugged’ and living their moments the old fashioned way.

So, how did that feel to you?  Would you like to be able to create quiet like that for yourself more often?

I know that I felt refreshed, energized, and appreciative of the  break.  It served as a reminder that I can create quiet in my life any time that I want to.  All it requires is that I set and maintain some boundaries for myself.

Time boundaries may be something that you need to communicate to others (i.e. when you need to unplug or shut the door and have time to focus) or they may be something that you need to assert internally (i.e. when you limit your on-line time or create and follow through on an exercise regimen).

Either way, time boundaries can help you create quiet in your life – or create space for whatever your heart desires.  As far as gifts go, time boundaries may be just about the best thing going.

So consider giving yourself this present … for your present … as you embark on a New Year!

What a timely topic, Paula! This time of year can seem so hectic…with all the focus on planning for the new year, setting goals, making and following up on resolutions. I appreciate the reminder to take time for myself to be quiet, and be able to focus on myself, my business, or nothing at all.

A question for you…what is the most important time boundary that you set for yourself? I’m just curious…

I so appreciate you speaking about getting quiet Paula. So needed to listen to the voice of our inner wisdom~

  • Karon Thackston

I need to remember your words of wisdom throughout the year, Paula.  As entrepreneurs, we so often neglect taking time for ourselves.

  • Marty Marsh

Thank you, Paula, for this reminder. I’m not naturally a morning person but I do like getting up every day about 5:00 am so I can spend a couple of hours reading, reflecting, and enjoying the quiet of the morning. As the weather warms up more I’ll be doing this outside.

I call this “easing” into my day and when I don’t do it, I miss it. I’m lucky to be in a household that respects my need to have this time.

  • Paula

What a great question, Terri!  I’m much in the same camp as Marty when it comes to mornings (although I don’t start as early).  ;~)

Maintaining a boundary relative to my morning time means that my day begins on the right foot – and I am much more ‘with’ myself, whatever comes along.

So, yes, I’d definitely say it’s that morning time boundary that’s the most important one I set for myself.

    How about you?

  • Paula

Thanks, Zahra – the quiet is so enriching, isn’t it?  I love the unexpected openings that it so often offers!

Hi Karen – We get so busy, don’t we?  It can be a challenge to not let tasks erode this precious time.  But the rewards are so palpable when we DO take care of ourselves!

  • Paula

Thanks, Marty – I loved reading about your ‘easing’ into the day ritual.  Sounds like a wonderful gift to yourself – and so important!  (And it’s great that you live in a supportive environment, as do I.  It certainly helps!)

I seem to like the nighttime better than mornings ;) I almost always stay up after everyone else has gone to bed, so I can get some alone time. I never really thought of it as a boundary but I do it pretty regularly, so I guess it is one!

Quiet time is essential for both refreshing one’s self and for focusing on strategy and directions for business and life.  Besides my morning quiet time I am a big believer in quarterly personal retreats. And even in a hectic moment, there’s always time for a slower breath.
