Have you ever wondered what the person subscribed to your email list thinks when they see your name in their inbox? Think about your email for a moment as a party guest. If your email newsletter, or any emails you send to your list, was like one of these types of party guests, what would it be? (Be honest.)
The Party Crasher – Would you open the door to an un-invited guest? Well, your potential reader feels the same way about a marketing message they didn’t invite into their inbox. Remember, it’s always a privilege that someone has asked that you keep them informed.
The Conversation Monopolizer – This guest has you trapped in a corner and does all the talking never once taking a breath to ask about you. They do nothing to establish any kind of common ground with me – in fact, it’s like they don’t know me at all and don’t care to know me. Email that always tries to “sell” me without giving anything in return is boring. And boring isn’t asked back to the party after a while.
The Wallflower – This is the guest that might be considered borderline anti-social. They show up to the party, they sit on a sofa by themselves most of the night munching chips and they have nothing interesting or substantive to add to any conversation. You wonder why they showed up at all as it’s just kind of…awkward. Same with your emails that sporadically show up and contain nothing of interest to your reader. Are you providing value to them in some way or just showing up?
The Friend That Helps You With Your Party – Ah, this friend gets you. She sees when the ice is running out and immediately goes and picks up a couple of more bags for you. She even stays and helps you clean up. Wouldn’t you love for your emails to be seen as helpful? Wouldn’t you love for your subscribers to get excited when your email comes through because they know there will be some good stuff for them to use?
A helpful rule of thumb for email marketing? Use the free-free-free-free-fee method. Show your care and nurturing with three helpful emails and only occasionally pepper their inbox with a promotion.
Does your email or newsletter feel like an old friend to your readers or something less desirable? Think about where you are right now, and what it would take to get your emails to “The Friend That Helps You With Your Party” status.
