Kristen Harris and Catherine Lang-Cline, co-owners of Portfolio Creative in Columbus, Ohio, have won numerous awards over the last year and below, they share how winning awards has helped them promote their business.
1. Your company, Portfolio Creative, has rapidly gained name recognition and notoriety as a leader in staffing for creative jobs. Tell us a little about the business and how you got started.
Catherine’s response: Kristen approached me with the idea for the business. At the time I was working as a freelancer and she was curious as to whether or not I would use a service like this. And I had actually worked with a service like this in the past in a different city. So with Kristen’s contacts, my clients and a couple of laptops, we opened the business. Our past experience allowed us to be specialists in this field as we knew all of the lingo and positions an art or marketing department might need.

Sorry, the giveaway has ended. Sign up for our newsletter (over there in the left column) for other great solo entrepreneur advice and learning opportunities, and you’ll also get notified of future events like this!
Back in December, as I was watching everyone and their brother announce their Christmas giveaway event, I was struck by how enticing these events are! I mean, everyone likes to get something for free, right? But there were three things that bothered me. First, unfortunately too many of these giveaways were for the same old freebies that are given away all the time. Second, many required signup — I just don’t have time for that and don’t want to clutter my inbox further. And third, they were all happening at the same time.
And so, the Solo-E Post-Resolution Hangover Remedy giveaway event was born! (ends Friday, February 5th, at noon ET)

You start creating next year’s success NOW. Not later. NOW.
If you don’t know exactly what you are going to put in place to move you into six-figures (and beyond) in the next 12 months then I want you to be on this call because I will be personally coaching you through your MUST HAVE inner and outer marketing plan.
And here’s a hint: You don’t need a fancy website, stellar twitter account or know how to use YouTube. These are great tools, but not the “magic marketing bullet” that you might think.

I’m just wrapping up the filming of my first pilot of Get it Done, Get it Back with Susie Shina. We are creating the pilot of a reality-based show where we help a mom entrepreneur (aka Metromom) work through a business struggle and a lifestyle struggle.
Within Metromom, I coach women to bring out that brilliance from their business. Susie works with women to restore their bodies, restyle their lives and reconnect with a passion for ‘the other stuff’. So we figured that together we bring true balance for working girls!

It can make good marketing sense to partner with a nonprofit or a cause.
Consider what my marathon friends did when they were raising money to participate in the 3-Day Walk (you walk 60 miles in 3 days to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for research). They approached a local restaurant called Backburner, which was famous for their cinnamon rolls. For a week, every time someone bought a cinnamon roll, they donated $1 to my friends for their walk.
I personally hadn’t heard of the restaurant, but when I found this out, my husband and I went and had breakfast there (complete with a cinnamon roll of course!)

One of the questions I’ve often asked is “What should I post on Twitter and Facebook”?
While there are several things you can post (check out my post on How to Become an Expert Using Content here) on Twitter and Facebook, the simplest of all is to let your friends and followers know when they’ve helped you in some way.
Rather than send a private “direct message” on Twitter, openly thank or congratulate someone for something they’ve done.

Between deadly pig flu, government bailouts and pirates, talking about the recession seems almost anticlimactic – nevertheless I wanted to share something I learned from Dan Kennedy at the Super Conference.
Dan had a special session about Recession Rescue, which included a bunch of good info about thriving during this time (I’ll be sharing more in later posts). He had an interesting point I wanted to talk about today:
One of the main reasons why spending is down is because businesses have stopped asking for the sale.

“We are here to serve people as they make the choice to invest in themselves…through us!”
I love this quote. I read it a recent issue of The Invisible Close newsletter by Lisa Sasevich. I consider her the goddess of authentic sales for solo entrepreneurs and especially women entrepreneurs. We heart-centered entrepreneurs are great at our work and often have trouble closing the deal!
She really understands the relationship that happens during a sales experience (yes, it is sales) and knows that it’s about helping people make decisions to work with you or purchase your products (or not as the clear decision may be).
