I cringe every time I hear one of those stories.  You've probably seen some version of it on the news: a trusted employee (usually dressed in a suit) is hauled away in handcuffs, finally caught after stealing from his company.

He may go to jail, this guy, but the poor business owner is stuck with the bill.  And it's usually a big bill, sometimes big enough to put the business under.

It's every business owner's nightmare.

And while this is the worst possibility, it's not the only thing the wrong bookkeeper can do.  Bad bookkeeping can get you in trouble with auditors, leave your financial records in chaos, and worst of all, hurt your business's credit and profitability.

As a business owner, you may be tempted to avoid this possibility altogether by doing the books yourself.  But this, too, can cause you trouble.  In fact, you might even be "the wrong bookkeeper" for your business!

Consider this...I know nothing about building a house.  Sure, I have a basic idea of how it works - get some wood, nail it together, and I'll have shelter.  It resembles a house, but it's not nearly the quality I could have had if I had hired a professional.  And because I didn't have the same knowledge as a professional contractor, it probably cost me twice as much.

If the government came to inspect this monstrosity, I'd be shut down.  I may even get fined.  And it doesn't matter if I don't know building codes; it was my responsibility as a homeowner to do the proper research, or hire a professional to do it for me.

Ever looked back on an experience and realized how you should have done things differently?  You don't want this to happen to your business!

I want you to spend your time concentrating on what you know best: your business!  And I don't want you to just hand your books off to someone, thankful you don't have to look at numbers ever again.  I want you to have the information you need to protect yourself, hire the right bookkeeper and be more profitable.

In the next article, I'll show you some simple ways to protect your business.

I'll also give you 10 Warning Signs That Your Bookkeeper May be Less Than Honest.

Because I also want you to be able to relax, concentrate on your business, and be confident that your bookkeeper is one of the good guys...
