Speaking to groups and organizations is an effective way to generate leads for your business. The audience gets a firsthand experience with you and your topic. When you deliver a well-crafted speech, you can inspire, educate and create a strong desire for potential clients to work with you. Plus, you can add these prospects to your contact and ezine list (with their permission).

What my clients often ask me for is the most efficient way to contact meeting planners and program directors to get these speaking opportunities. While you can make a call or mail packages with your speaking topics and credentials, I don’t recommend this. Many meeting planners and program directors are overwhelmed with the amount of contacts that reach them in this manner.

Instead, I have found email to be the most efficient method to find speaking gigs. All it takes to start is a very brief email with one simple question, “Do you accept outside speakers?” My signature talk is called ____. If so, please let me know.”

Find Time for AutoHotKey and … Find More Time!

Finding time to make the most of your writing time is a perennial challenge. If you’re a blogger, or if you have an online business that involves lots of communication, you’re probably at the keyboard quite a bit!  And if your business depends on connecting with your customers, you will want to be able to respond to them quickly – AND you will definitely want your communication to be accurate and typo-free.

Well, quite some time ago – in 2009 actually – I wrote about a tool called AutoHotKey.  Since that time, my VA has been using AutoHotKey for a lot of her work, and is finding it very helpful as a time-saving tool!

So that’s why I felt it was worth mentioning again. It’s a free tool that you download from the AutoHotKey website, and it gives you the ability to create your own customized hotkeys. They will increase the speed and accuracy of your work, especially when it comes to frequently-repeated tasks.  That, in turn, will free up more of your time for thinking, creating, developing products … or even for some refreshing and relaxing “me” time!

Sunday Afternoon Reflections

As I sit here on my patio watching the squirrels and birds play in the trees I started to think about how difficult it can be for me to have down time. After all, I came outside because I can hear my mother saying “Sissy, you need to spend time soaking in the vitamin D” but what did I do?  I brought my laptop with me.  Just like to so many driven over-achieving multi-taskers, I find it difficult to step away from my business.

This seems to be a running theme through my life lately.  On Friday my personal trainer asked me if I ever woke up in the morning and didn’t want to work.  That almost never happens to me.  Of course, when I asked her if she ever wakes up and doesn’t want to work out she said no.  LOL  So we just have different passions and we are truly committed to those passions.

I often have conversations with solo-preneurs and small business owners about attending live events.  I keep hearing the same excuses for why they can’t  commit (and I can’t say much because I have used these excuses before on occasion).

“I saw your post on Facebook re: asking questions. Have you heard of XX? I would love to hear your opinion in terms of if you think this will work towards bringing traffic to my site or if it is a ‘bright shiny object.’”

I’m going to start by saying I really don’t know anything about XX (which is why I blanked the name out) but one thing I DO know is anytime you ask if something is a “bright shiny object” then it probably is.

Look, you know in your heart what you need to do to be successful in your business. I know you do. And that next step can be anything from getting your ezine out to hiring an expert to either teach you how to do something or just get it done for you.

Make Creativity Happen

You know what people lack the most any more?

It is not money, nor materialistic items. It is creativity. Some people will find that they have so much creativity that they can’t hold themselves back from ideas, but others seem to struggle with creative ideas.

There are plenty of ways that you can get more creative; you just have to get more creative. That is in activities. You need to make sure that you are doing plenty of activities that stimulate the mind.

Finding time to recover, whether from an illness or a life event that has thrown you off track is key to your resilience.

And what is resilience?

Well, the definition, according to Merriam-Webster (on-line version) is:

1: the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress

2: an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

Which Comes First – Branding or Content?

Many people who are trying to get a new business rolling, struggle with what needs to get done first. Some will say that establishing branding is the most important step, with the name and tagline all flushed out. Others will lean towards figuring out the content. I hear this question a lot from clients who are getting started and I can tell you that the experts don’t necessarily agree.

To be honest, the answer depends on whom you ask. If you ask the branding experts, they will be up in arms if you don’t nail down the name, feeling that branding should be the first order of business. But if you ask me, I am more of a content gal and feel that it’s better to know what you are offering and get that all worked out as your first priority. In my practice over the years, I find too many people get into perfection paralysis around their business name, their tagline, their website, and so on.
