Here She Is…

Here she is folks–now where the hell do I find her? And who is she really? Most people think they understand their ideal client. They have a general understanding of who they are and their pain points, but most people don’t actually go far enough to have a clear (best friend like) understanding of exactly who their ideal customer is.

Recently while performing a little retail therapy at Kate Spade, I was awe struck at the elegance and specificity they had in their ideal client. In case you can’t read the photo it says:
She is quick and curious and playful and strong. She is a voracious reader and a fantastic dancer. She saves old snapshots, but always loses her umbrella. Her emails pile up, but she never forgets to call her grandmother. She has $7 in change at the bottom of her purse.

Amazing client identity Kate Spade created. So how deep have you gone to discover your ideal client? Here was a stab at mine (still incomplete), but a start….and a few creative ideas to get you going!

She is stubborn, bright, and witty. She takes financial risks but carries a written budget in her bag. She loves the show tunes, college basketball, and handbags. She is motivated by money but equally motivated by giving . She is classy and fun, drinks vodka martins, and can curse like the boys. She is not intimated by men and they are not intimated by her – she is fiercely feminine but resents names like goddess, diva, and queen… She is confident that she can change the world but has no confidence that she can work the GPS on the way there. She has no problem being the boss and dreams up the next business in her spare time.

A few tips to get you started:

1) If you opened your idea clients handbag….what would you find it?

2) If you looked at your ideal clients iPhone…what apps would they have?
3) If you read the bank statement of your ideal client…. what top 3 places does their money go?

Give yourself the opportunity to get out of the normal ideal client profile and go deep, get personal, and discover who your favorite customer really is.
