In this article I discuss things that can make a difference in helping you ‘Get on Your Dime, Create Your Exclusive Space and Take You to a Whole “NEW” Level’™.
I have excerpted some of Melinda Emerson, the SmallBizLady 5 ‘must dos’ and included some of my additional techniques and tips.
When you consistently follow these 5 ‘must dos’, you can expect to have ‘ GSA’ = mastering ‘ Growth* achieving mastering ‘Growth* achieving Success * living in strategic Acceleration’™.
The worst thing you can do for your business is to start each day in a race. I am a strong believer in preparing for your day before you jump into it. I start each day with prayer. I find that I am able to keep a positive outlook throughout my day regardless of what happens because I started the day with prayer.
When you start your day thinking about what you are grateful for; it allows you to keep your perspective when things go wrong.
Running a successful small business involves being proficient at ten or more jobs at one time. My recommendation is to slow down and meditate before you start each job, each day.
2. Know your cash flow situation
You simply must know the details of your cash flow every single day or you could suffer significant lose including the lost of your business. At minimum, you should run your business based on a 90-day cash flow projection.
You need to know how much money is coming in and what money must go out on a daily basis. You also need to stay on top of what invoices need to go out and what the payment procedure is for each of your clients.
I recommend starting collections procedures (reminders) the first day after your money is past due. Never hesitate to call your client or the bank to get clarity about your cash flow situation.
No matter what accounting software you use or what bookkeeper you hire, as the owner of the business you must know your cash flow situation every day.
3. Set aside two hours a day for business development
Every day, work on getting in front of someone who can buy your products or services. Remember, sales are the life’s blood of your business. Each day you must perform business development activities in order to stay ahead of the competition.
You can make calls, write emails, send thank you notes, etc. Search for conferences and trade shows to attend, develop signature content and use social media to build relationships and generate leads.
Always make it a priority to spend at least two hours a day generating new business.
4. Follow-up with three existing connections
People do business with people they know, like and trust, but you must nurture those relationships. Reach out to existing clients you haven’t spoken too in a while. Give one to three recommendations on LinkedIn. Send a personal note on Facebook. Make three calls or send follow-up notes with an article you read in The New York Times, the Washington Post or a magazine.
5. Get your plan together for the next day
I have 4 hours blocked out on my calendar every day so that I can work on my ‘top 5 tasks’. I make my list of the top 5 tasks that I must complete the next day at the end of each day. This is my secret to sleeping well at night.
I devote two intense non-stop hours to one of the five tasks (highest priority) and the other 4 tasks I work on over the remaining two hours. I do this until all tasks are completed.
