Time management tips double in power as you develop the power to set boundaries that stick. Asking 3 laser-sharp questions in advance makes all the difference.

The Power of Independent Thinking

To start with, develop a rock solid understanding of where you can proceed completely independent of others’ permission or cooperation. Quite often, you will discover that your actions alone can successfully maintain your new boundary. Sometimes this requires rethinking your boundary, of course. Your reward for making this effort is that you keep the power to succeed in your hands.

Have You Encountered These Problems in Setting Boundaries?

1. Your boundaries lack clarity and conviction.

2. You are overly forceful with others, generating backlash.

3. You have no idea how to proceed if others refuse to cooperate.

If so, you are not deficient in boundary-setting genes! You must simply sort out where you possess the full ability to move forward, regardless of how others might feel about your boundaries. The following 3 questions will help you identify your realm of autonomous power.

Boundary Checklist for Creating Autonomous Action Steps

What steps can you take independently? List them.

For example: you wish to work undisturbed between 2 and 3 PM every afternoon. If you require that no one call you, you lose the power to enforce your boundary. If you inform people that you will not answer phone calls or emails during this time, you retain full power to enact your boundary.

Reframing boundaries = Reclaiming power

What falls within your responsibility? Identify it.

You must identify where you need to retain full control of outcomes. By keeping these actions within your control, you prevent others from sabotaging your effectiveness. For example: someone you carpool with is chronically late, resulting in your not arriving to work on time. Once you create a workable Plan B to reach your place of work on time, you can set a clear boundary with your laggardly companion. That person will then be faced with the consequences of arriving late, not you.

Responsible planning = Maintainable boundaries

What is non-negotiable? Protect this.

Fully committing to protecting a block of time provides you with a challenge. What responsibility must you assume to declare your independence? For example, you wish to cut all contact from your workplace while on vacation. You might delegate responsibilities in your absence, work evenings to set up contingency plans, or plan on coming in on a weekend when you return to tie up loose ends.

Advance problem solving = Secure time boundaries

Utilizing this checklist will give you enormous confidence, and give your boundaries the strategic support they deserve. Best of all, they will give you back your time.
