Time management tips are powerful agents to help you survive and thrive. Use this exercise to generate a personal resilience profile. From this base of strength, you can develop an array of approaches for whatever comes your way.
Resilience shines in the core of success. And it’s a composite of many vital qualities, some of which you already possess in abundance. Those you lack, you are capable of developing. More than intelligence, connections or even luck, resilience will see you through.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
Resilience transforms. As you may have discovered, dancing in life’s storms might not change the storms, but you change yourself!
If you question this, ask yourself: were you raised to associate well being with avoiding major challenges and stressors? In the near future, avoidance might appear to work. But this approach carries a heavy cost. Only when you lose fear of the unexpected can you move forward proactively.
Just think – no more waiting for sunnier days, while fears of imagined outcomes nibble at your sleep and self-confidence.
Instead, start thinking in terms of your resilient strengths. Here are just some of the qualities that might currently help you stand in your power:
How you combine strengths may be highly personal. But your unique constellation of competency will most likely help you face and reframe challenges, strategize how to use your time, and navigate through crises.
What might you add to your list? Your personal base is essential to know, to respect and to build on. It grows as you grow. And as you grow, your understanding of resilience will mature and deepen.
Start Creating Your Personal Resilience Profile Using This Exercise
Find a quiet corner, relax and envision a recent situation you found challenging. Notice the details, and see yourself relating to the demands. Call upon all of your senses.
- What do you hear?
- What do you see?
- What emotions arise?
- What sounds, smells and touches do you associate with this source of stress?
Next, recall how you responded to this difficult situation. Remain present to yourself in a supportive way as your review your choices. Now, return to the present moment and jot down how you met each challenge.
- What strengths did you pull on to move forward? Make a list of them, and include how you felt throughout the process.
- Next validate yourself. Sense how you have emerged stronger by using your signal strengths.
This may inspire you to revisit any other impasse that you encountered and grew through. And as you trace the evolution of the situation, you also see the evolution of yourself.
What additional resilient qualities would you like to acquire? What values underlie them? Remember that in the same way that core muscles support you all the time, resilience enables you to flex, stretch and strengthen every day.
As you take in just how many surprises and reversals life holds, and plan accordingly, do your best to approach yourself with compassion and understanding. The more you genuinely care for yourself, the more protection you will have from unrealistic expectations of yourself and self-recrimination. Then you truly learn from that greatest of teachers, your own mistakes. There’s an inner sense of safety that only comes when you know you are on your side, no matter what.
Storms do look different, once you know you can dance through them!
