“Michele, do I really need a newsletter, I mean is it really worth my time, after all I already have a website and a blog?” I’ve heard this before; a lot…actually. So I decided to address it in today’s post. Here are the 4 main reasons why your business needs a newsletter.
1. Keeping in Touch – Newsletters are a great way to stay in touch with your existing customers. You are able to add personal touches to your relationship and celebrate milestones, both your own and your client’s. Not only can you enhance your relationship with your customers, the newsletter is a great platform for introducing new products or services and sales or discounts.
2. New Clients – People rarely buy right away. Often they will shop around and compare, come back, and look some more before they are ready to buy. Having a free newsletter that offers your ideal clients the opportunity to learn more about you, your business, and your products or services gives your business greater visibility. A newsletter can be a very simple strategy to turn a one-time visitor into a lifelong customer.
3. Establish Your Expertise – You want to be seen as the expert in your niche. Having a newsletter is an effective way to establish authority in your business community. Share your nuggets of knowledge through your newsletter to deepen your relationship with your existing customers and convince potential customers that you can provide solutions to their problems.
4. Build Your List—If you have a blog or a website, put an opt-in box on the page. Without an opt-in option, people browsing your page are lost to you once they leave your page. But you don’t want them to be gone in the wind. By opting into your list and subscribing to your newsletter, you are then able to continue relationship building with them.
Now that I have convinced you that you need to publish your own newsletter, what comes next?
The easiest way to get started is by creating an electronic newsletter. Don’t make this harder than it has to be. It’s simply an email with great content. Simply give it a name, decide on a topic, and start writing. I tell my clients to sit down one day and create a list of 52 topics, one topic for each week of the year. If that’s too overwhelming start with 12 topics, that’s a solid 3 months’ worth of themes to start with.
You’re not writing a book, you’re not even writing an article. Newsletters are short, friendly, and to-the-point. You’ll need to determine a delivery method and set up a mailing or autoresponder service to help you.
Make sure you have creative email subject lines. Just because you send an email doesn’t mean it’s going to get opened. You need to make sure your subject lines are so enticing people want to click on them. Go take a look at your emails, look at the one’s you opened and the one’s you didn’t. Why did you open the emails you did? Take notes, and use them to help get your newsletter opened.
