The Top Business Growth Strategy: Pick Your Ugliest Frog First

The other day I was straightening up the books on the book shelf in my home office.  Before I knew it, I had opened the book: Eat That Frog: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy.

I had the opportunity to meet him at the 2012 National Speaker Association’s Winter Conference.

In case you may not know, Mr. Tracy has consulted for more than 1,000 companies and addressed more than 5,000,000 people in 5,000 talks and seminars throughout theUS,Canadaand 55 other countries worldwide.

I sat for awhile and started reading various sections of his book.  In the book, Tracy quotes Mark Twain (American author and humorist) who once said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day.

Okay so what’s the frog:  According to Tracy, it is your biggest most important task, the one you are most likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it.  It is also the one task that can have the greatest positive impact on your life and results at the moment.

Okay, here’s my favorite! The first rule of frog eating is this: if you must eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.

In other words, if you have two important tasks before you, start with the biggest, hardest and most important task first.  This has been one of the very best business growth strategies I have ever used.  For the past three years, the first two hours of my day (after working out with my Personal Trainer) are the two ‘uninterrupted’ hours that I devote to my ugliest frog.

Note what I said: I devote at minimum two ‘uninterrupted’ hours each day.  You would be amazed at the amount of work I get done every week.

Studies have shown that first thing in the morning is the time that most people’s minds are the clearest, the office is the quietest, and most likely the person hasn’t gotten pulled in six different directions — yet.

This time is your one opportunity to prioritize the thing that matters to you most, before your phone starts ringing and the email inbox starts dinging. By knocking out something important on your ‘to-do’ list before anything else, you get both momentum and a sense of accomplishment before 10:00 AM.

Getting things done is a habit, and if you start every day by accomplishing something important, you’ll get more done than 90% of the people in your department or your business competitors.

My clients are high-achieving women executives, entrepreneurs, non-profit leaders and coaches.  One of the top business growth strategies that I recommend to my clients is to always pick your ugliest frog and eat it first thing in the morning. It is the best way to master Growth * achieve Success * live in strategic Acceleration.

ACTION ITEM #1: Before you leave your office today, choose your frog, and write it down on a note pad that you’ll see when you arrive back at your desk in the morning. If you can, gather together the materials you’ll need to get it done and have those materials at hand.
