Online visibility can be a nebulous term at times… yes it’s about being seen so people know about you and can buy from you, but it’s also about what people associate you with when they see you. I call it the emotional imprint your brand, business, and message leave on others so they not only see you, but they remember you.

There are a few directions your visibility can take you. One is how your customers see you. That’s where you want to build the know-like-trust factor so people will buy from you.

Another is how your peers and colleagues see you. You still want to build a know-like-trust factor, which can result in referrals, joint venture opportunities, speaking gigs and even media coverage.
Your reputation does and will precede you… so get yourself ready for more business and better opportunities by keeping abreast of what your reputation says about you.

1. It’s OK to be nice
Somebody keeps saying nice folks finish last… not true. You can be nice all the way to the bank and sleep well at night knowing you owe no apologies and have a clean conscience. You don’t have to be sappy nice or fake, just run your business from a good place and focus on putting great products and services out there.

2. Be honest.
There are people who look really successful, write sales letters that make them sound like rock-stars… and aren’t making any money. They want you to think that, but in truth they aren’t. You don’t need to post your financials for the world to see, but just don’t start pumping yourself up as a person with a lifestyle that’s not really yours. People won’t trust you if you’re not honest. Period.

3. Pump Others Up
It’s always good to compliment others on their success… even if it’s your competition. That’s not always easy , but you can “like” something on Facebook or send a quick congrats comment to someone and you’ll stand out as the bigger person.

4. Be sensitive to people’s feelings
One time an internet marketer running a big launch decided to send out emails listing all the conversion numbers, opt ins, and stats generated by the various affiliate partners. It was pretty embarrassing to the people who didn’t have the high numbers yet. So what happened? They had bad feelings, felt publicly humiliated and bad mouthed the person who did that. Perhaps it was done in the spirit of healthy competition, but ended up leaving the marketer with a soiled reputation.

5. Think Twice, Click Once
That darn “send” key… gets us into so much trouble. Just think twice before you send something out that you could regret… the inappropriate comment on Facebook, the sarcastic email, the broiling complaint. A little rant every now and then is cathartic, but if it gets nasty the villagers will have a field day with you.

These are common sense bits of advice but words to live by. Remember: your visibility isn’t just about what your marketing projects. It’s also about how you interact with others in your industry and what they’re saying about you. Keep that in mind as you grow your business through greater online visibility.
