In Part 1 of Seriously, Was 2013 all it could be? – 4 Steps to Achieve More from Houston West Chamber of Commerce, in Houston Texas, I cover the first 2 steps of the 4 steps to achieve more.

Now let’s look at steps 3 and 4 below. Remember these steps will lead to growth, success and acceleration.

Step 3 – can be a variety of items, many of which you are probably already familiar. For example, using the sales example from above, say sales are below what they should be. Quickly look at the probable — being either insufficient leads (which is marketing), or insufficient closing of the leads (which is sales).

Pick one to improve and create a list of action items to change your current position on sales.

If it is marketing, look at your SEO and website. Also look at where your best customers have come from in the past. Is it time to add another marketing element to your mix because other marketing processes have slowed or stop working?

If you do actually have a good number of leads coming in and don’t seem to be closing enough of them, then look at your sales scripts, your unique sales proposition, or your guarantee.

Maybe your past “grow by referral” strategy was what worked well before and your sales process wasn’t really well defined because people just bought because of being a referral. Now that referrals are slowing down, your other leads are not closing because you really don’t have a good sales process.

Are you selling the “old” way, which is all about the features and benefits of your product or service, instead of the new way, which is all about what is in it for them?

Creating an action item list can be as simple as reading the right book or finding the right articles on the Internet.

Step 4 – is the simplest, if you have the right reason. Taking action on the ‘to-do list’ will be easy when you have a good “why”. The “why” is the reason(s) you do what you do.

Maybe, you want to provide a good lifestyle to your family, to yourself, or to your grandchildren. You want to actually make this upcoming year the year you give a large amount to your charity, church, or community of choice.

Even the “I know I can do better” can be a great reason, a great “why”. The “because the mountain is there” reason is good for a few people.

Those who want the achievement, to do all they can, to be the next Michael Phelps of their industry.

All of the steps can be clearer and execution simpler with a coach/mentor. Michael Phelps, Bill Gates, and all those super successful well known acknowledge their coach and mentors frequently.
