The other day, I received the below email entitled: Seriously, Was 2013 all it could be? – 4 Steps to Achieve More from Houston West Chamber of Commerce, in Houston Texas.

I thought that the information was spot on for high-achieving women (who are entrepreneurs or employedpreneurs) and I wanted to share it with you:

Looking back, when done properly, will give you clarity on what the future will bring.

For example, consider 2013 in the area of sales.

  • Was 2013 a record-breaking year?
  • Were sales flat or declining?
  • Did your business industry expand, contract, or stay the same?
  • How did your company sales compare to your competition?

With these questions answered you can now follow a simple 4-step process, if you are seriously looking backwards to improve the future.

Step 1 – Understand thoroughly where you are today.

Step 2 – Make a decision, to either stay there or to change where you are.

Step 3 – Create a list of action items to change your current position.

Step 4 – Executive the action items from Step 3. Repeat until you reach your desired results.

Step 1 – Understanding where you are today, is pretty straightforward. You are either vacationing frequently, with your team handling the customers, the business are growing at a pace that exceeds inflation, and profitability is nearly maximized, or you are not.

If not, are you the person working the hardest in your business? Are the big sales, or all the sales, dependant on you? Are you not where you should be at considering your experience, your knowledge, and the market you operate in? Step 1 is really simple, if you are serious.

Step 2 – The most interesting of all the steps in my opinion. As I’ve coached hundreds of business owners, step 2 is the one that seems to be the most challenging. Step 2 – although a super simple step, when you are actually very serious — this is a very challenging step as well.

Do you want to change? The answer is only “yes”, or only “no”. There is no room for “yes, but”, or “no, because”, there is only a “YES”, or “NO” answer. Just make a decision!
