Yesterday as my daughter and her friend were headed out of the house, I asked where they were going. The answer, “To catch Pokémon in the park, it’s exercise!” LOL. Late last night my phone rings and it’s my son. He seems out of breath so I ask what he is doing, and he says that he and his girlfriend are walking around downtown catching Pokemon. It seems I can’t read a headline, or have a conversation without some mention of Pokémon. In fact, it even came up in my mastermind last week with my private clients! I haven’t played yet, but when a company can generate this much frenzy and increase their market value by 7.5 Billion dollars in less than a week with a free app, they’ve grabbed my attention; and I just had to share with you 3 marketing tips you can learn from the Pokémon Go craze.
Let me catch you up real quick on what Pokémon Go is. It’s a game, a free app that you can download to your phone. The goal is to catch Pokémon (pocket monsters) train them, and battle others with them. But, in order to do that, players have to go out in the real-world; in their neighborhoods, parks, streets, and local businesses to track them down.
So what can Pokémon Go teach you about marketing?
Go Where the Pokémon Are
Pokémon are more likely to spawn or appear in areas that are heavily populated such as parks, restaurants, and shopping centers. So if you are a player, these are the places you’ll go. Let me ask you a question? Are you creating reasons for your ideal clients to come to you? It’s not enough to know who they are; you have to create experiences for them to show up in your arena whether that is online or offline. Pokémon Go has proven that if you have something others want, they will come. In fact, many small and large businesses have capitalized on the Pokémon craze by purchasing Lures. Like the name suggests, Pokémon hunters are lured to this destination to catch a rare Pokémon , but guess what else they do while they’re there…become customers!
It’s Easy to Play
Besides the fact that this just seems to be a really fun game, it’s super easy to play. Download the app, go outside, and start walking. That’s it. The goal of all marketing is to get potential customers to take action, but you have to make it easy for them to take action!
- Look at your website, is it easy to navigate?
- Is there a visible, easily accessible opt-in box?
- Does your website have a mobile version?
- Is your affiliate program simple to join and easy to use?
Make sure your call-to-action is simple to implement, more people will respond.
Pokémon is free to download and play, but making in-app purchases gives players an advantage most people can’t resist. That’s how free apps work. They lure you in with their “free game”, but make in-app purchasing completely irresistible! You can use this tactic too! How would you like your business to be irresistible to potential customers? Use freebies, contests, and giveaways to build your business. Freebies are hard to pass up! This is an easy way to gain exposure and get people to opt-in to your email list. Use your list to deepen relationships, promote products, and offer sales and discounts. Having a responsive list is the difference between a successful business and a failing business.
Did you notice that Pokémon Go isn’t an entirely new idea? What they did was take a twenty year old phenomenon and re-release it with a twist. They created a game that gets people outside, moving, and socializing; as they capture and battle Pokémon. How does this translate to a service based business?
