When you’re marketing to clients, no effort you put forth will get off the ground unless you understand some very simple marketing concepts. These tips will help you connect and understand your clients and connect with them in a meaningful way. Once you get your mind around these, conversations with clients and prospects will suddenly make connections, develop relationships, and increase sales.
1. What’s the pain point?
What is the client’s problem? Sometimes this is very literal, like if you’re a massage therapist or yoga instructor. But in the case of many entrepreneurs, the question becomes more abstract. What’s the business challenge that your clients have? What can they not accomplish for themselves? Identify this, and you have your starting point.
2. What’s the goal?
Quite simply, what result is your client looking for? Do they want that kink in their neck smoothed away? Do they want their newsletter in better shape? This is your second step. Your marketing piece will need to let clients know that you have a firm grasp on what they want to achieve. Paint a glorious picture of what their life could be like if their pain point were removed or resolved.
3. You have the solution
Now that you know the problem and what the desired outcome is, you can swoop in and let clients know that you can bring them out of their pain point and into resolution. List the ways you can solve the problem.
4. Move them to action
This part is vital to the success of any marketing effort. In traditional marketing-speak, this is a “call to action” or a CTA. This is the part – usually at the end of your marketing piece – where you clearly and specifically tell your client what you want them to do. A good CTA is very short and very clear, such as “buy now!” or “sign up today!” It will also create a sense of urgency, so that clients don’t decide to wait (and forget).
And that’s it! There are many more details to creating a great marketing piece, but these basics will get you to where you need to be nicely.
