Do you know what really ticks me off? Watching small business owners having to give up on their dream when I know there are some super simple things they could do to make their business a success. In a minute I am going to talk to you about one of those things but first I wanted to make sure that you have checked in with your goals lately.

It is July already and man do I know it – we are having an excessively hot summer in Louisiana but that isn’t the reason I mentioned it. Depending on how you look at it, this year is already half over or you could say we still have half to go. I prefer the later and I wanted to remind you that it is time to look at the personal and business goals you set at the beginning of the year to make sure you are still on track. Are there any adjustments in your plan that you might need to make? Do you need to get on the ball and start getting some new clients? Better yet, maybe you should focus on creating a new buying opportunity for the ones you already have. Just food for thought.

I know that you have a passion for what you are doing. I also know that you are really good at it and that is why you decided to start your business. So let’s face facts. If you aren’t making money at it or maybe I should say not making the money you want to make then there is probably one main issue – Are you the best kept secret in town? I have to tell you I almost can’t stand that statement because in todays world of social media there is no excuse for it anymore. I get to talk to lots of small business owners and I am constantly asked what is the Return On Investment for social media so I thought I would give you a few to start thinking about.

1. Spread the word about who you are and what you do – you will no longer be the best kept secret in town. This is what I did to go from a complete unknown online (remember I owned a trucking company before this) to being asked to speak on tele-summits and stages all over the country.

2. Build a targeted email marketing list – One of the amazing things about social media is that if you have the ability to have conversations with people who specifically fall into your ideal client description. No matter what you have heard (and I have been hearing this for a while now) email marketing is not dead – it is very much alive and kicking and your list is still very important.

3. It is a great way to drive traffic to your website or blog – And as we just said above your traffic can be targeted. I have used social media exclusively to drive all the traffic to my site. And remember traffic = $$.
