When you’re working hard to create new, valuable offerings for your clients, it can be hard to come up with exciting materials all by yourself. If you’re operating in a silo, your ideas might start to get repetitive and unoriginal. One of the best ways to keep your creative juices flowing, your energy up and your ideas popping out one after another is to get another person to help.
Two minds percolating on the same topic can play off one another, expanding and redirecting each others ideas. Ideally, you’ll get into a free flow of ideas that can generate dozens more ideas than you would alone.
Another person can act as a sounding board for your newest bright idea, helping you decide if it’s viable, crazy, or so crazy it just might work. They can ask questions, pose likely scenarios, try to poke holes in your idea, and help you think of ways to improve it.
Make it Fun
Having a partner to volley ideas back and forth with can make you feel happier and more engaged with the process. Working with another person who is an enthusiastic supporter makes the brainstorming fun and stress-free.
With a partner, the stakes are lower and it’s easier to see where even a great idea might go wrong. A brainstorming partner can help formulate a backup plan for how you can handle it if the idea you really love doesn’t live up to your vision of it.
When selecting a brainstorming partner, it’s helpful to choose someone who is familiar with your business and who can see the bigger picture of how your business exists and functions within its industry.
If you already have a business partner, that is great. But be wary of asking a spouse or partner to fill in this role. People who love you tend to be supportive of your ideas even if they aren’t that great. Objectivity is essential to your success, too.
