Want Credibility? You Need to Earn It

The word credibility is often thrown around a lot, especially when you’re a coach or consultant. But what is it really? And how does one get it?

Credibility is the quality of being trusted and believable. (So it’s obvious why a business owner needs it.  I mean, we also know people buy from people they trust.)

Being a good entrepreneur, you probably already have some credibility.

But how do you get more? I hate to break it to you, but you have to earn it. You can’t just go around saying you’re credible. You need  people to say it for you. Here’s how:

1. Publish. Publication is perhaps the single best way to achieve credibility. That’s why so many coaches suggest writing a book, as it’s an instant credibility booster. However, there are other routes to publication besides a book.  Become a guest blogger. Contribute articles in industry magazines and newsletter. Offer op-ed pieces to the local paper.

2. Teach. Teaching also allows you to establish your credibility. With online teaching technology you can now share your knowledge in a number of ways. You can host online seminars. You can create a forum or membership site. Sharing your knowledge is an excellent way to establish credibility.

3. Network. They say it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. And in many ways this is true. You can gain credibility just by who you know. For example, if you’re a business consultant and you say, “The other day Seth Godin told me” you absorb some of his credibility just buy knowing him.  (Remember that it needs to be the truth!) Of course you also have to work to retain that credibility. Network, not just with industry gurus but also other people in your field. The more you connect with others the more your credibility will build.

4. Get good press. Good press and publicity also helps boost your credibility. It puts you in the public eye and gets people talking.
