Authors love the idea of writing stellar books and selling them by the boatload. Many romance the idea of their book making it to the #1 position on Amazon, making lots of money and writing their next bestseller.

The reality is most authors will never sell more than a handful because they haven’t given much thought to how potential readers will find their book.  Many think their book is going to be “discovered.” The fact is that, in order for your book to be found among the millions that are listed on Amazon.com, one of your primary jobs as an author is to develop and implement a marketing plan.

This is where lots of authors freeze, shut down and run the other way — fast! They love writing, but fear the unknown of getting the word out. They are often the same people who say how lucky bestselling authors are.

If this describes you, then you definitely need to read the following information.

Luck has very little to do with an author’s success or the success of their books.

A solid marketing plan with focused implementation of the plan is more likely the driving force behind virtually any author’s success.  Yet, many authors have not organized themselves in such a way that allows for consistent marketing.

It is essential to create balance that allows you not only to write, but also to market your books. If you are not one who wants to do your own marketing, an option is to hire to assist you someone who specializes in Internet marketing and book marketing.

This is where I get lots of pushback from authors on a limited budget. “I don’t have the money to hire someone!” they quickly protest.

Either you get on board with your own marketing, you accept that you need to budget for reliable and knowledgeable help or you must realize that your book will be a minimal performer at best.

With all that’s available by way of the Internet, it is actually a lot easier to market and sell books than in the past. However, in some ways it is more difficult due to the number of books on the market. Your job as an author is to stand out in such a way that people know about your books and are eager to buy.

The good news is it is possible to sell thousands of dollars worth of books from the comfort of your home. Be aware, however, that it will take more than having a listing on Amazon.com. In addition to your Amazon listing you absolutely must be consistent in your book promotions.

There are dozens upon dozens of ways you can promote your book from the comfort of your home.

Here is a partial list of what you can do:

  • Virtual book tour
  • Promote to your opt-in subscribers
  • Web-radio interviews
  • Dedicated blog
  • Guest-blog postings
  • Article writing with a link back to your blog or the Amazon page
  • Facebook FanPage
  • Teleseminars
  • Joint-venture promotions campaign
  • Video trailers
  • YouTube Channel

There are countless more, but you get the idea. Each day do something to get the word out. However, you should avoid trying to do everything all at once.

Begin with one idea to implement and add something new every few days. If I had never marketed books before, the one I would begin with is to put up a dedicated blog. Why? Because the blog should be the hub of all your other marketing. You can use your blog postings in a number of effective ways that all link together.

Regardless of what you choose to do first, just start. Avoid one of our main enemies as authors — procrastination. “I’ll start tomorrow” is one of the most dangerous phrases to an author. Tomorrow will never come.

To successfully market and sell, begin today. Even fifteen minutes a day can make a huge difference — the difference between the dream of selling books and actually getting them in the hands of eager readers.

  2. Thanks for the boost Kathleen. I’ve been really behind in promoting my book and these are ideas that have given me some ideas to get a plan of aciton.

  3. You are most welcome c-section. One thing that I find helps a great deal is to write a list of what you can do on a daily basis for 30 – 60 minutes. Consistently market in small increments of time and amazing results follow.

    For example, in my overall marketing I do 3 – 5 things every morning before I delve into my emails. This morning, I visited three forums and commented on posts, added a post of my own, sent a message to my FB fans about the Solo-e blog tour and did a few tweets.

    When I first began this practice I had to stay very focused and resist the temptation of checking my emails during the marketing time period. Now it is a habit that is very easy to implement.

    I am just about (finally) ready to write my book, and your suggestions are perfect timing.
