When you inform others that you’ll take time for yourself, provide a clear-cut frame. Setting well-defined time boundaries demonstrates that you understand that your time choices affect them, too. Consistent follow-through shows your respect, which builds trust and fosters good will.

You’ll enjoy the best outcome by doing your homework before each discussion. Are you taking this time for a project? Then develop a realistic estimate. Figure out exactly how much time you will need for planning, getting supplies, solving problems, completing it to your satisfaction, etc. Be generous with your predictions, and remember the Times 2 rule! Better to finish earlier than planned than to run late and risk inconveniencing others.
